You could call it a health breakthrough or the kickoff of human trials, but Elon Musk’s Neuralink has already been in a patient’s brain since January 29th, 2024.
The patient’s identity is still a mystery, but Elon, via X said the ‘patient is recovering.’ What’s the deal with Neuralink?
The implant has 1024 electrodes on 64 threads, wirelessly charged through induction. It’s so advanced that a dedicated robot-surgeon had to insert its ultra-fine threads, too delicate for human hands.
Is Elon Musk aiming to take control of human minds as effortlessly as he took control of Twitter?
How does it work?
Health innovation or a new way of control?
Neuralink is pitched as a healthcare innovation, aiming to help conditions like quadriplegia through ‘Telepathy.’ With ‘Telepathy,’ a dedicated system by Neuralink’s creators, a person’s brain activity is monitored and translated into actions – letting them control a computer or smartphone just by thinking, no wires needed. It’s a ‘brain-computer interface experience,’ a game-changer for those without options.
“…even when someone has never had vision ever, they were born blind, (…) we believe we can still restore [their] vision.” – said Elon Musk during Neuralink’s ‘Show and Tell’ event. 👁 Assuming the relevant brain area is intact, the chip is said to allow bypassing the eye and generating images in the brain directly. One could say that Neuralink’s creators seem to redefine the boundaries of a miracle.
A beautiful and noble use of AI? Absolutely! Especially since human trials are justified by the potential societal and health impact. But picture this – Neuralink becoming a universal information exchange interface between silicon and the brain, implanted in everyone.
Quoting Musk himself: “We are already a cyborg to some degree.” What do you exactly mean, Mr. Billionaire Founder? In the future, would we have to pay for using our own brains? Well, with Elon in the picture, better start saving for that subscription!
